A knack for colour

I can sense a few mother-daughter collaborations coming on in future years, though daughter may out-do mother if this artwork is anything to go by. Little m did this yesterday with NO help or direction from either parents. Colour, tone, shape, texture - all her own. I am in awe of her use of colour - shades of green with just a pop of peach and blue finished with the hand-cut, pink-outlined circles pasted on top. I'm framing this one in something to do it justice. And I might even get her working for me too.

7 Vignettes, Day 7: Pattern

To me this is the perfect mixture of natural and man-made. The natural swirl and pattern of the succulent with those subtle pink-tinged leaves is reflected in the swirl of the green japanese dining plate and the many swirls in the beautiful red and white Samantha Robinson porcelain ceramic bowl. I also like that the grooves on the wooden table are straight and angular in contrast to the swirls. For a five minute shot this morning between feeding kids I have impressed myself.

7 Vignettes, Day 6: Old

I'm not a great hoarder of things and this is good and bad. Sometimes I get rid of things and regret it later, but mostly it makes me be really selective about the things I keep. This tether car, lovingly restored by my dad, is a perfect example of the good. I could look at this for ages. I placed it here against the 'old' fireplace and then added some colour using the rug - the colours in the rug pick-up the number 12 on the car. Old and new together and it definitely works with my design sensibility - I only wish I could keep the car here on display, unfortunately, little inquisitive fingers mean it wouldn't last long there.

7 Vignettes, Day 5: Cushions

I do love patterned cushions, but whenever it comes to adding them to my home I always tend back to simple colours. I think it's because I prefer the artwork to do the talking. Here I've used this 1976 Japanese print as the focal point against our navy/grey jardan couch with light grey jardan cushions against magenta ikea cushions. There's a country road throw on the couch to add some texture and a white hanging wire sculpture against the white walls for some subtle shadow play and depth. And as a finishing detail, the design sponge and abigail ahern books. Looking at this everyday makes me happy.

7 Vignettes, Day 4: Shiny

I'm not  naturally drawn to shiny interiors, mirrors aside, so I found this really difficult. I ended up using my Alessi bowl on a backdrop of a dark wooden side table, stone sculpture and vase and navy/grey jardan armchair. The magenta bougainvillea adds a pop of colour. Not one of my best, but I'm not too unhappy - especially considering my daughter allowed me only 5 hours of sleep (broken into three lots) the night before.

7 Vignettes, Day 3: Love

Yes, you've seen this before, here. I tried styling and photographing this in other ways, but I just kept coming back to this vignette - I love it that much - and I reckon that suits today's theme of love perfectly. You can't argue with true love!

7 Vignettes, Day 2: Texture

I've always loved using fashion and jewellery as art in the home. For Day 2 of the 7 Vignettes Instagram challenge I've coupled together this amazing Toni Maticevski sequinned top with a painting I did years ago using layers of brown and gold paint and hessian-like fabric. I like that the rounds of the sequins in the top are mirrored by the rounds in the painting and that the light plays similarly on both. To contrast I've added the yellow/green ikea cushion with horizontal textures and the fabric flower along with the smooth strands of pearls. I'm really happy with the mood and touch of romance this image evokes for me. But I do wish the top looked as good on me as it does hanging on the wall!

7 vignettes, day 1: Books

So I've joined my first instagram challenge - 7 vignettes run by (the interiors addict) Jen Bishop. 7 days, 7 vignettes - nothing like a deadline to get one motivated!

First up, books. And in our house at the moment it's all about books for the littlies - of course, I suppose I could have used the time creating this vignette to open one myself, but hey, priorities. The vignette has actually turned out a lot more vintage than I'd envisaged, funny because vintage isn't generally my style, but I suppose I have always loved old-school illustration - I swear the books are for the kids!
